Dean's Competitive Fellowships

Arts & Sciences Graduate Fellowship Competition

The College of Arts & Sciences announces a competition for one-semester graduate fellowships for either Fall 2022 or Spring 2023. 
Continuing students in masters or doctoral programs in Arts & Sciences are eligible for consideration, with priority given to doctoral students. These fellowships are designed to recognize achievements and well-developed research plans to offer time released from assistantship duties to promote progress through degree programs, including field work and thesis or dissertation completion.
Eligibility: Current A&S graduate students. A maximum of 1 nomination per department.
Amount: $10,000 plus a tuition scholarship and student health plan enrollment
1. Letter of nomination from the student’s graduate advisor that addresses the applicant’s strengths, current graduate GPA, and progress through the graduate program.  The letter should also explicitly state how the student's plans for the fellowship period will promote their timely degree completion. This should be no more than one single-spaced page.
2. A statement from the nominee that clearly explains their detailed plans for the fellowship semester.  This should be no more than two single-spaced pages.The statement should clearly explain:
  • The applicant's research project (this may include research objectives/questions, a description of work completed to date, and/or an overview of research and writing goals) 
  • How the applicant will use the research funding to make progress towards degree
  • How the research will advance knowledge in the applicant's field
  • The applicant's qualifications to undertake the project (this may include a brief description of achievements, such as publications and presentations, to date) 
3. A modified NSF bio-sketch CV that highlights degree progress and research-related accomplishments. This should be no more than two single-spaced pages.
4. Brief endorsement from the Director of Graduate Studies that affirms the applicant's good standing within the program and his or her plans for the fellowship semester. Please also make clear which semester each applicant is applying for (Fall or Spring). This should be no more than one single-spaced page.
