Aiming For New Heights: Conference on Civil Rights

Presenters will include:

  • Gerald L. Smith, UK history professor and Scholar in Residence of the Martin Luther King Center. Smith, who has spent years researching Kentucky CORE personalities, activities, frustrations and accomplishments. He will speak about Lexington’s CORE heroes, who risked their security, their future and even their lives to bring down the barriers of racism and segregation in the bluegrass state, securing a better future for their descendants.
  • Joann Martin, co-founder and executive director of the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum
  • John Johnson, executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights
  • Jerry Gore, 2012 NEA Woodson Award winner
  • Charles Neblett, civil rights activist and original civil rights movement’s Freedom Singer.

Attendees to the free event will also have the opportunity to view two exhibits that brought the public out in droves when they were previously hosted at the university: Calvert McCann’s collection of photographs he took during the civil rights movement and "Freedom Times: The Underground Railroad."

The afternoon will be devoted to the children, about 100 from 5th through 12th grades, all from different youth groups and programs. Their workshop breakout will focus on economic empowerment, peace education, the Underground Railroad and voting rights and responsilities.

A registration form, permission slip and photo release must be completed for youth to attend the workshops. Free lunch will be offered to those who donate canned food items.

16th Annual University of Kentucky Philosophy Graduate Student Conference

The College of Arts & Sciences and the Committee on Social Theory presents the 16th Annual University of Kentucky Philosophy Graduate Student Conference. The conference is also co-sponsored by The Graduate School at the University of Kentucky. While all academic papers in any area of philosophy will be considered, preference will be given to those addressing the broad themes of the intersection and relation between philosophy and community, culture, and society.  Such themes may include: What is philosophy's proper relationship to the community?  How can philosophy (or humanities/academia in general) better relate itself, or communicate its concerns, to the greater community?  What are some philosophical conceptions of community?  And so on.  All quality papers in any philosophical "style," whether "analytic," "historical,"  or "continental," will be considered.  Papers of an interdisciplinary nature are strongly encouraged.
 
Deadline for submission: February 8th, 2013.
 
Submission Guidelines: Papers and abstracts should be prepared for blind review. 
 
Please submit the following as separate documents: 
 
a) cover page with author's name, title of paper, word count of paper, institutional affiliation, and contact information (including email, phone number, and mailing address) 
b) an abstract of no more than 300 words 
c) the paper itself, double spaced, of no more than 3500 words. Word, pdf, and rtf are all acceptable formats.

Dimensions of Political Ecology Conference 2013

The University of Kentucky Political Ecology Working Group is hosting the third annual Dimensions of Political Ecology: Conference on Nature Society.

Now in its third year, the 2013 Dimensions of Political Ecology Conference will provide opportunities to engage with contemporary scholarship on the political-economic causes and effects of environmental degradation and ecological change. With an interdisciplinary and international group of presenters, panelists, and keynote speakers, this year's conference will offer considerable insight into pressing contemporary questions relating to sustainability, global climate change, and local environmental conflicts. This year, we have over 200 scheduled presenters, representing a wide variety of geographic and disciplinary affiliations.
